Jacobo Pérez – Jurist, writer and professor.
The illustrious jurist, Dr. Jacobo Pérez, has held very high governmental posts, such as, Governor of Magdalena, Legal Secretary of the President of the Republic of Colombia, member of the Supreme Court of Justice and of the Council of State, Minister of Government. In 1991, he was the Secretary General of the National Constituent Assembly when the new Constitution of Colombia was ratified.
He has been a Law professor in many important universities in Bogota.
He is the author of the significant textbook Colombian Constitutional Law. His other work includes The Radicalism, The Regeneration, and The Black Robles and His Time.
The eminent jurist was born in Aracataca in 1925.

Gabriel García-Márquez
– Writer, journalist
Colombia's most famous author, Gabriel García Márquez received the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982 for his masterpiece One Hundred Years of Solitude.
Several works have been translated and he has won many prizes and awards for his brilliant narrations, short stories and articles.
His novels include Love in the Time of Cholera, The General in his Labyrinth, Chronicle of a Death Foretold, No One Writes to the Colonel, The Autumn of the Patriarch, Evil Hour, and News of a Kidnapping, as well as his autobiography, written in 2003, Living to Tell the Tale. García Márquez was born in Aracataca in 1927.

Arturo Eduardo Bermúdez – Historian.
A very important historian of Magdalena, Bermúdez is the president of the Academy of History of Magdalena, a member of the Colombian Academy of History as well as other important academies and historic societies.
He has been honoured with a silver medal from the Friends of Castles of Spain Association and the Parchment of Honour of the Society of Architects of Magdalena. Bermúdez was born in Santa Marta.



Musicians, Composers and Singers

José Benito Barros
(1915-2007) – Composer
Maestro Barros was one of the most prolific composers of popular Colombian music. He authored many paseos, cumbias, porros, pasillos, boleros, tangos, currulaos and meringues.
Some of his best-known works are La Piragua, Momposina, La llorona loca, El Gallo Tuerto, and Las Pilanderas. He has been recognized and honoured with prizes throughout Colombia. Barros was the initiator of the “Festival of the Cumbia” in El Banco where he was born.

Julio Bovea
(1934 -2009) – Composer
A great promoter and singer of Vallenata music, Bovea's first hit was the merengue La Mujer Celosa. His album Bovea y sus Vallenatos, el son de mi Tierra has been received with acclaim. He currently lives in Argentina where he composes Vallenata music on the guitar. Bovea was born in Santa Marta.

Jimmy Zambrano
– Musician, composer and arranger
Throughout his musical life Zambrano has played many Colombian rhythms. He was an arranger and accordionist for the band Los Diablitos and has organized several Vallenata music groups.
He saw great success when working with the composer Jorge Calderón and has received many international awards.
Zambrano was born in Guamal.

Guillermo Antonio Barreto
– Composer and economist.
This two-time winner of the “Centauro de Oro” at the Villavicencio Colombian Song Festival has produced over thirty folkloric music compositions. In 1982 he won first prize at the Colcultura National Festival of the Folkloric Song. Barreto Vásquez was born in El Banco in 1953.

Carlos Vives – Singer, composer and actor.
Vives is a famous singer, player and composer of Latin pop, rock and Vallenata music. He won best song at the Latin American Grammy Awards in 2002 with his song Déjame Entrar and his album El Rock de mi Tierra won Best Contemporary Tropical Album in 2005.
His other albums are Tengo Fe, La Tierra del Olvido, El Amor de mi Tierra, and Clásicos de la Provincia. His award winning albums have reached gold, platinum, and diamond on the charts.
Vives was born in Santa Marta in 1961.



Sportsmen

Carlos A. Valderrama "El Pibe Valderrama"
– Soccer player
Recognized as Colombia's greatest soccer player of all times, Valderrama has received many distinctions throughout his career. He is currently the director of the Pibe Valderrama Academy. He was born in Santa Marta in 1961.

Fidel Bassa Santana – Boxer
This well-known sportsman has won the National Amateur Championship, the Central American Games and the Caribbean Games. He was the "Flyweight Champion" of the World Boxing Association from 1985 until he retired in 1989. Bassa was born in El Retén in 1962.

Radamel Falcao García "El Tigre" – Soccer player
This remarkable soccer player received the 2012 Globe Soccer
"
Player of the Year" Award in Dubai, in addition to the two titles he has achieved with Atletico (Europe League and UEFA Super Cup), He began his brilliant career in Santa Marta and then in Bogotá. He has been a member in national and other countries soccer teams. Currently, he is a member of the Club Atlético of Madrid (Spain). Born in Santa Marta in 1986.



Artists

Luis Magin
– Painter.
The stunning paintings of this talented artist have been exhibited in Bogota, Ibagué, and other Latin American cities. Many of his best works were stolen from a show in Los Angeles, United States, and never returned. Magin was born in 1931.

Jitoma Sofiame
– Painter.
Sofiame's many paintings show the wealth of the native culture of the Aruhakos of Sierra Nevada de Santa Marta. He has taken part in several collective exhibits throughout Colombia and has been awarded for his work three times. Sofiame was born in 1935 in the native community of the Aruhakos in Magdalena.

Hernando Del Villar
(1944-1989) – Painter.
This well-known Magdalenese painter has shown geometric and abstract works at many of the most prestigious museums, galleries and libraries of Colombia.
A hall in the San Pedro Alejandrino estate Bolivariano Musuem has been named in his honour. Del Villar Sierra was born in Santa Marta.

Zarita Abello de Bonilla
– Watercolour painter.
An internationally recognized prize winning artist, Abello has shown her work in numerous Spanish, Cuban, Mexican, American and Colombian galleries. The Mexican National Museum of Watercolour displays a number of her paintings in their permanent collection. She was born in Santa Marta.

Angel Almendrales – Painter
Acclaimed for his individual and collective exhibits, Almendrales Viadero has received much recognition for his work.
The prizes this artist has obtained include the Statuette of the Gabriel Garcia Márquez Society for the most outstanding artist of 1990 and the “Rodrigo de Bastidas” medal of merit in 1999. The highly praised painter was born in El Banco in 1954.

Teresa Sánchez – Sculptor
The detailed and finely carved sculptures of Teresa Sánchez have been nationally and internationally recognized for their beauty. She has exhibited her work in Colombia, Switzerland and Chile. Teresa Sánchez was born in Santa Marta in 1957.
