Artists

Salvador Moreno
(1874-1953) – Painter
The recognitions of this classical painter began in Paris where he won first prize at the Spring International Exposition in 1896. Two years later he achieved one of his greatest distinctions with his painting Carmencita la Sevillana.
Sadly, the brilliant artist went mad before reaching the age of 40. Only a few of his paintings remain and are hung in only three museums. Moreno was born in Cúcuta.

Eduardo Ramírez
(1923-2004) – Sculptor.
One of the greatest sculptors of the 20 th century, Ramírez began his artistic career as an abstract and expressionist painter before dedicating his life to sculpture. He received many awards throughout his career.
His most famous sculptures are The Mural of the Bank of Bogotá and Memories of Machu Pichu. His works have been exhibited in museums around Colombia and some of his sculptures have found permanent homes in New York and Washington. Ramírez Villamizar was born in Pamplona.

Beatriz Daza
(1928-1968) – Ceramicist.
This famed artist was awarded the first prize in ceramics during the XV National Exhibition Hall, in 1963, for the piece called Crisol para Prometeo. Another example of her beautiful work is Testimonies of the Objects, which are walls made of different elements.
Many of her ceramic pieces have been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the country.
She was born in Pamplona.



Sportsmen and Women

Fabiola Zuluaga
– Professional tennis player.
At the age of 13, Zuluaga won the championship of the ten tournaments of COSAT South America Tour. This famous tennis player was the national champion from 1989 to 1994. She has won 14 international singles tournaments and has collected several gold medals in doubles before retiring in 2005. She was born in Cúcuta in 1979.

Jossimar Orlando Calvo – Gymnast.
Gold Medal winner at the 2011 Pan American Games. This young champion, began his training at the age of 7.
His victories began at early age, having won 97 gold medals up to 2011.
The great gymnast was born in Cucuta in 1994.

James Rodriguez – Soccer player
Rodriguez won the Golden Boot as the top scorer at the FIFA World Cup in Brazil (2014). He tallied six times in five matches. This excellent player has also received other major individual awards such as revelation player (2009 Argentina), best young player Copa Libertadores (2010), best player in the Toulon Tournament, " Golden Dragon" revelation of the year (2011), best Portugal player in August and September 2012 , he was among the top 100 players in the world (2012 and 2013) , best young French League player (2014), Rodriguez was born in Cucuta in 1991 but he grew up and got trained in Ibague (Tolima).

Musicians and Composers

      


José Rozo (1894- 1976) – Composer and orchestra conductor.
The compositions of this famous musician were first recognized during his stay in Austria, when the Symphony Orchestra of Vienna premiered the suite Colombian Land in 1930. Upon his return to Colombia he was appointed as conductor of the National Symphony Orchestra and later became the conductor of the National Band.
His works include Brocal, Bruselaca, Intermezzo and he was the composer of the Norte de Santander Anthem. He was born in Bochalema.

Oriol Rangel
(1916-1977) – Musician.
This pianist, violinist, organist, flutist, composer, and conductor, was a very important Colombian musician. Rangel conducted the National Band and the Nueva Granada Orchestra, and he also directed the radio program Nocturnal Colombiano.
His best-known compositions are the Pasillos Pamplona, Sunrise in Monserrate and Fita Chiquita. To honour him the Oriol Rangel Concert Hall was opened in the Planetarium of Bogota. The maestro was born in Pamplona.

Arnulfo Briceño
(1938-1989) – Musician.
A composer of pasillos, bambucos and joropos (Colombian folkloric rhythms), Briceño was presented with numerous prizes and honours throughout his life. In 1967 he won the Colombian Song Festival in Villavicencio for his composition Ay, mi Ilanura, which became the anthem of the department of Meta. He was born in Villa de Sucre.
