(Arranged by date of birth) Miguel Antonio Matus (1928-2001) – Writer. One of the most prolific writers of Arauca, Matus' works are mostly related to the area. Examples include: History of Arauca and Arauca and Its Farm Lands. He was the founder and president of the Academy of History of Arauca, and member fo the Academy of History of Colombia. He was born in Arauquita. Miguel Ángel Martín (1932-1994) – Historian, journalist, composer and singer. This talented Tameño, and promoter of Eastern Plains folk music, founded the Conservatory of Meta and the Colombian Song Festival. Martin's best-known song is the joropo Carmentea. He was born in Tame in 1932. Silvia Aponte – Writer As a novelist, historian and author of children's literature, she has been rewarded for her many outstanding works. She was born in Arauca in 1938. Joaquín Rico – Composer, singer and dancer An artist of Llanera music, he has won several awards in Colombia as well as Venezuela. His most famous compositions are La paloma mensajera y El tacamajaca. Rico was born in Mapora in 1939. Rafael Martínez – Musician, composer and poet. Recognized throughout the Colombian and Venezuelan Plains as 'El Cazador Novato', Martínez has won the first prize at the Joropo Festival in Villavicencio. He is currently working as an artistic director in Maracay, Venezuela, on the production of the CD entitled “Dimus”. He was born in Cravo Norte in 1940. Santiago Tovar (Mano Bona) – Poet. Some of this author's work about the traditions of the Eastern Plains Region can be found in the book Anthology of Araucan Poets. Tovar was born in Cocuicitas in 1940. |
Juan Fernando Farfán – Composer and singer / Counterpoint. The winner of many Eastern Plain music festivals in Colombia and Venezuela, Farfán has traveled throughout Colombia, México and Central America promoting the traditional folk music of his home. He is perhaps best known for his piece El Araucano. He was born in Villanueva in 1947. José David Parales (“El Querubín”) – Journalist and harpist. Parales has been the director of the Academy of Music of the province of Meta and has won the Colombian Song Festival in Santander. He has also worked as a press advisor for the Cundinamarca Government, a member of SAYCO, and a cultural advisor for the department of Arauca. Parales was born in Arauca in 1947. Oswaldo Bracho (1951-2000) – Composer, singer and piper, Bracho's career began in Venezuela as a piper and singer of Llanera music.He quickly became one of the most famous folk music composers and singer of the Colombian and Venezuelan Plains. He was born in Arauca. Fabio Cadena – Singer and composer. His first album, Soñando contigo, brought this singer fame in 1995. Since then he has had great success in Arauca and other parts of Colombia. Cadena was born in Arauca in 1973. |
