Musicians, Composers and Singers Guillermo Rendón – Composer. This brilliant composer is the author of 86 symphonic works, cantatas, concerts and chamber music. He has also been the conductor of the Symphony Orchestra of Colombia, the Philharmonic Orchestra of Brno, Czech Republic, the Chamber Orchestra of Caldas and the Conservatory of Manizales Choir. His most important compositions are Quartet for clarinet, horn, cello and piano, Garden of the Gods for orchestra, and The Passing of Shadows. He has received honours and prizes in Colombia and around the world. He was born in Manizales in 1935. Fabio Alberto Ramírez – Musician. A celebrated composer of folkloric and popular music, Ramírez Salazar has conducted numerous musical bands. He is currently the director of the Department of Cultural Promotion at the University of Manizales. His most popular musical works are A Mis Viejos, Dulce Niña. Mi Tierno Amor, and La Cascada. He has won first prize at the Festival Emaus in Manizales, first prize in the Mono Núñez National Festival, as well as first prize in the Icfes-Cres Contest. He was born in Manizales. Paula Marcela Castaño – Pianist. The concert pianist, Doctor of Arts of the University of Antioquia and Master in Musical Education, Paula Marcela Castaño, studied at the Conservatory of Music of the National University of Colombia (Bachelor's degree with Merit) and at Cologne University of Music in Germany. She was the finalist in several national music performance competitions. These achievements gave her career a boost. She has been devoted to public service from the academy as a pianist and piano professor in several public universities in her country and in German schools of music. Born in Manizales in 1982. Music Groups Legatto Vocal – Choral music. This choir was founded in 1996 by several members of the opera of the Faculty of Arts of the University of Caldas. They have been invited to participate in music festivals around the world. The group has received many distinctions, among them, first prize in the vocal category at the Festival of Christmas Pereira in 1997. In 2001 they won at the XI Pasillo Festival in Aguadas and also earned first prize at the XII Bambuco festival in Pereira in 2003. Their album, Ser, contains works of different rhythms such as boleros, bambucos, pasillos, Colombian coastal rhythms, jazz and bossa. Jaime Duque (1917-2007) – Philanthropist. After years of being a commercial pilot, this admiral benefactor devoted his life to cultural and social work. In the department of Cundinamarca he founded a cultural and recreational park that bears his name. Any profit derived from the park went towards a charity for helpless children and the elderly. Jaime Duque was born in Villamaría. Monsignor Augusto Trujillo (1922-2007). The emeritus Archbishop of the city of Tunja (Boyacá), Monsignor Augusto Trujillo, was the spiritual guide of the Colombian people for more than forty years. During the Holy Week, his voice could be heard in every home over the radio. His appeals for peace and equality were published in newspapers throughout the country. Monsignor Trujillo was born in Manizales. Beauty Queens Miss Universe Luz Marina Zuluaga –1958– She was Miss Caldas in 1957 and first runner up at Miss Colombia Beauty Paegeant. She was crowned Miss Universe in 1958. She was born in Pereira in 1938 when that city was part of Caldas Department.
