(Arranged by date of birth) Álvaro Mutis (1923-2013) – Poet, narrator and novelist. The novelist and poet, Álvaro Mutis, was one of the most famous writers of Hispanic literature. He was honoured with many prestigious awards such as The Cervantes Prize for Literature (the Nobel Prize of Hispanic Literature), the Prince of Asturias Prize for Letters, the Reina Sofía Prize for Latin American Poetry, the Roger Caillois Prize, the Médicis Prize, the Javier Villa Urrutia Prize, the Colombian National Prize in Letters, the National Prize of Poetry Cassius Clay, the Order of Arts and Letters of France, the Aguila Azteca of México, and the Grand Cross of Alfonso X the Wise of Spain. His works, including The Lost Works, Tasks and Troubles of Maqroll the Gaviero, Amirbar, Ships Dreamer Abdul Bashur, Personal Anthology, The Last Port of Call of the Tramp Steamer, Ilona Arrives with the Rain, and Summa of Maqroll the Gaviero (Poetry, 1948-1997), have been translated into more than ten languages. María Mercedes Carranza (1945-2003) – Writer, poet and journalist. The poet Maria Mercedes Carranza was the editor of the literary pages of the Bogota newspapers El Siglo and El Pueblo of Cali, as well as, editor-in-chief of the weekly Nueva Frontera. She was the director of the Casa de Poesia Silva from its foundation in 1986 until her death in 2003. The best known of her many works are her books of poetry, I Am Afraid, Hello, Solitude and her anthologies New Colombian Poetry and Seven Young Short-story Writers. The “National Prize of Poetry Maria Mercedes Carranza” was created as a posthumous homage to her. Hugo Niño – Essayist and linguist. Prize-winning writer specialized in mythological narratives and in ethno-literary studies and is distinguished for his magnificent investigative work on native cultures, mainly in the Amazon region. Since very young, he decided to live for several years in that region, where he worked as a teacher in a school for natives. While there, he studied the tongue of the Indians (natives) and became familiar with their authentic cultural values, described by him as being full of human greatness. At present, Niño is a professor of Latin-American literature. In 1976, he was awarded the Casa de Las Americas prize for his book Primitive Tales Told Again. In 2008, he received the prize for the second time for his book The Ethno-Text: The Voices of Astonishment. His other works include Rodapalabra , The Sun Myths and The Story of Gitoma. Niño was born in 1947. |
Juan Gustavo Cobo – Writer, poet, historian and art critic.
The recipient of numerous homages, this famous historian and Man of Letters, is a member of the Colombian Academy of Language. A great promoter of Colombian culture, Cobo Borda has held diplomatic positions in Argentina and Spain, and served as Colombia's Ambassador to Greece. He has been director of publications for Colcultura and editor of Echo Magazine. His first book of poems Advices to Survive, was published in 1974. Eleven years later, his anthology of Latin American Poetry was produced in El Fondo de Cultura Economica de Mexico. He has written Tea Room and Land of Fire, as well as many essays, including, Borges in Love, Germán Arciniegas, Álvaro Mutis, and To Reach Garcia Márquez. The third edition of his book History of Colombian Poetry -20th century- from José Asunción Silva to Raúl Gómez Jattin, was published in 2003. He is also the author of several books about Colombian artists. Cobo Borda was born in 1948. Laura Restrepo – Writer and journalist. The first book by this author, Story of a Fascination, was published in 1986. With the publication of her novel, The Angel of Galilea, in 1995, she was awarded the "Sor Juana Inés de la Cruz" prize, conferred by the International Book Fair in Guadalajara, Mexico, the "Prix France Culture" by the French critics and the "Arzobispo Juan Sanclemente" prize by students of the Santiago de Compostela Lyceum ( Spain ). In 2004 she received the "Alfaguara Prize for Best Novel" for her book Delirium, a literary work translated into several languages. Her other works include Isle of Passion, Cows Eat Spaghetti, Leopard in the Sun, The Dark Bride, A Tale of the Dispossessed and The Scent of Invisible Roses.
