Musicians and Composers (Arranged by date of birth) Alejandro Villalobos Arenas (1875-1938) – Composer Maestro Villalobos was a wonderful composer of classical music inspired by regional themes. His works were played by symphony orchestras and sung by choruses. He wrote music in the tango-intermezzo and fox-intermezzo genres, as well as marches and hymns. He was born in Piedecuesta. Luis A. Calvo (1882-1945) – Composer, pianist and violinist A brilliant composer and interpreter of the inland music of Colombia, he is often remembered as one of the most important musicians of the 20th century. He wrote nearly 300 pieces of music including, dances, bambucos, pasillos, and waltzes. His best-known works are Malvaloca, Lejano Azul, El Republicano, Adiós a Bogotá, Secretos, Noel, Anhelos, Tus Pupilas, and Escenas Pintorescas de Colombia (suite for orquestra). The Luis A. Calvo Conservatory of Music in Bogotá was founded to honour the Maestro. The most important cultural precinct of the 'Universidad Industrial de Santander, in Bucaramanga, was named after him.He was born in Gámbita. José Alejandro Morales (1914 - 1978) – Composer One of the most prolific and admired composer of Colombian folkloric music, José A. Morales has inspired many with his beautiful and sentimental songs. Among his many works are Pueblito viejo, Maria Antonia, Doña Rosario, Bambuquito de mi Tierra, Pescador, Lucero y Río, Ayer me echaron del Pueblo and Soberbia. Maestro Morales received many awards and recognitions during his career, including being honoured at the Mono Nuñez Festival in 1998. A neighbourhood in his hometown of Socorro has also been named after him. Sportsmen and Women Moisés Fuentes – Swimmer Fuentes was a medal winner in the men's 100 meters breaststroke SB4 at the Paralympic Games in Beijing ( China ) in 2008. He is the first Colombian swimmer to have been decorated with a medal in the Paralympic Games. This admirable disabled athlete had won awards prior to the Olympics, such as a silver medal in the Paralympian World Cup in Manchester, England. He also obtained four silver medals in the Tournament of the Americas in Rio de Janeiro and he won the bronze medal in Durban, South Africa. He is ranked among the 10 best swimmers in the world in his specialty. Fuentes was born in Valle de San José ( Santander ) in 1974. Félix Cárdenas – Cyclist Félix Cárdenas is one of Columbia's best cyclists. He has won the Tour of Spain mountain climber race two times and in 2006 he won the Japan Cycling Tour as a member of the Barloworld team. He was born in Encino. María José Uribe – Golfer At only 17 years old, María José Uribe, was the first South American to win the 2007 US Women's Open Amateur Tournament. She is also the first Colombian to obtain a title from the United States Gold Association. She was the winner of several other junior national and international tournaments. She was born in Girón in 1990. |
